Who We Are

GMJ Construction Ltd began with a simple belief — that quality construction should never be a compromise. Founded by Gavin Starie and his son James, the business grew out of their family carpentry firm, Starie Renovations, where the two spent years honing their skills side by side across residential and rural projects throughout Suffolk and beyond.
As the business grew, they brought in Matthew Page — a trusted colleague with exceptional expertise — to complete the team. The rebrand to GMJ Construction Ltd was a natural evolution: Gavin, Matthew and James together, combining over 45 years of industry experience under one name.
From groundworks and oak frame extensions to bespoke kitchen fit-outs and large-scale landscaping, GMJ has become one of Suffolk's most trusted construction teams — known for quality, reliability and a no-nonsense approach to getting the job done properly.

GMJ Construction Ltd is owned and run by three directors who between them have spent their entire careers in the construction industry. What started as a father-and-son carpentry business has grown into one of Suffolk's most respected construction firms — without ever losing the personal touch that comes from a family-run operation.
Gavin and James Starie founded Starie Renovations, building a strong reputation for quality carpentry and renovation work across East Anglia. When Matthew Page joined the team, it was a natural fit — bringing complementary skills and shared values. The three rebranded as GMJ Construction Ltd, a name that reflects their equal partnership and combined ambition.
With over 45 years of hands-on experience between them, the GMJ directors are actively involved in every project — not just overseeing from the sidelines, but on the tools, solving problems and making sure every job leaves the site to the highest possible standard.
James Starie
Co-Founder & Director
James grew up learning the trade from his father Gavin, developing into a highly skilled carpenter and construction professional in his own right. Co-founding Starie Renovations gave James the platform to showcase his talent, and the growth into GMJ Construction Ltd is a testament to his drive and commitment. James brings energy, precision and a meticulous approach to everything he builds. When he's not on site, he enjoys fishing and making the most of time with his wife and young son.

Gavin is the cornerstone of GMJ — a seasoned tradesman with decades of experience spanning structural builds, timber frame construction and project management. Gavin's calm head and depth of knowledge are invaluable on every project GMJ takes on. Outside of work, he's happiest on two wheels or enjoying a quiet evening at home with his wife.
